Tricia’s Poetry Stretch this week at The Miss Rumphius Effect is to write a personal ad poem about an animal or literary character. Mine turned into more of an Infomercial after doing research on google and I really battled with my lack of technical know-how re: poetry, but I found my research interesting. The inspiration for the poem came from the photo I posted for Wordless Wednesday.
A many splendid sacred thing
- Eye dazzling wander when strutting my stuff,
Emblem of old Egypt’s god Ra, Pravo Crisatus.
Symbol of India and the Ming Dynasty, enough?
Many splendid eyes given to me by the Queen of Olympus.
Hindus hold my angelic form in high esteem,
knowing its the sight of my feet that makes me scream.
- Guarding the gates of paradise in Islamic folklore,
for early Christians – a sign of resurrection, new birth.
I help turn base metal into gold, what’s more,
a symbol of divinity, fertility, other things of such worth.
Used for the most solemn of oaths by the Knights of the round table,
and for healing rituals and magic in Native American Indian fable.
- Displaying more blue and green hues then the sea
scientist claim to know the exact mechanism behind
my luminescent beauty. On the 10th of October 2003,
light reflection, not pigmentation, was the great find.
But my praise goes to the Alpha and Omega, the great I AM
for not making me anything like an ugly old Ram.
I think this is lovely. I’m not sure why so many of us wrote rhyming poems, but that certainly wasn’t a requirement! One of the things I love about these stretches is how I am surprised by the way folks approach them and what they choose to write about. I never would have thought to write about a peacock, but what a wonderful subject!
Have a great weekend – Tricia
Thanks, so much. I was very unsure of this one and needed the encouragement. You just made my day.
I enjoyed this…the less obvious rhyme was a nice change from all our other very rhymey poems (mine included!).
I loved your infomercial phrases like “and what’s more,” and “the exact mechanism.”
Thanks for sharing!
